Former West Brom employer Ron Atkinson led the tributes to Dave Matthews today following the death of the person who was labelled aMr Albion.a Matthews died suddenly at his Halesowen house on Sunday evening at the age of 67 to bring still another sombre note to the team following death of his good friend and Albion masseur Derrick Jones this past year. The well-known kitman was a veteran greater than 2000 activities, working together with 24 different managers-head instructors through the triumphs and disappointments of a 50-year commitment to the club. The Halesowen-based father-of-two then announced his retirement after a period off work fighting cancer. He told guests: aI have managed to change my hobby into my life-style and my career and I'm very lucky. aI have worked with some wonderful people and some of the great people of the club and itas been a privilege.a A host of former executives attended including Roy Hodgson, Tony Mowbray, Atkinson and the tributes were joined by Johnny Giles, who today. Giles said: "I have just actually fond memories of working with Dave. He was at the club when I acquired there and it was clear instantly that he was Albion through and through. aThe main thing is that Dave was initially class at his job and it's a really essential position at any club. Dave was magnificent.a Former Baggies captain John Wile explained Matthews as aone of the ladsa as the clubas former playersa organization, which made him an member in 2011, named him aone of us. And the sentiments were echoed by Wileas former key defensive companion Ally Robertson, who worked closely with Matthews from his early days at the club.
