Stoke City's Steven Nzonzi drops in at the Bucknall Co-op - This is Staffordshire

SUPERMARKET shoppers stopping off to buy their lunch ended up with more than they bargained for – when Stoke City footballer Steven Nzonzi turned up for a chat.

Customers at the Co-operative, in Werrington Road, Bucknall, were given the opportunity to meet the popular player yesterday.

Staff and customers were also encouraged to write down their top Stoke City highlight to be included in the club's 150th anniversary memory book.

Potters' fan Shaun Stubbs, aged 22, of Corneville Road, Bucknall, who was at the store with three-year-old son Oliver Mountford, said: "I didn't know he was going to be there. I only went in for a scratchcard and a drink and there was Steven Nzonzi.

"Me and Oliver are both Stoke City fans so I asked if we could have our photographs taken with him and he said 'yes'. I went back a bit later with my Stoke shirt and got him to sign it."

Ten-year-old Josh Swan, of Birchgate Grove, Bucknall, had a day off school because he was poorly. But he soon perked up when he saw his favourite footballer.

Kirsty Proctor, aged 29, of Abbey Road, Bucknall, who called into the shop with two-year-old daughter Ocean Wilkes, said: "I was talking to one of the staff when they told me Steven Nzonzi was going to be there in about half-an-hour so we waited until he got there.

Cousin Kerry Proctor, aged 28, of Trinity Place, Bucknall, added: "Once I got in there I had a photograph with him. He also signed my shirt and I got an autograph for my grandad.

Leo Hampton, aged 19, of Ruxley Road, Bucknall, said: "I went in to get some shopping and there was Steven Nzonzi. It was something to do with the club's 150th anniversary celebrations because I know they are trying to get the players more involved in the community."

Stoke City Supporters' Club's Meet The Fans night – which should have been held last night with a number of players – had to be cancelled because of the ban.
