A review of H. Clay Earles, the President of Martinsville Speedway

Never in his wildest dreams did Axton, Virginia's H. Clay Earles imagine his racetrack would be such a large section of NASCAR history. Born in 1913, Earles created Martinsville Speedway in 1947 after first noticing the crowds at local racing events. During the time, he had already had a as the owner of a hall that went bust as well as a drive-in owner and a few gas stations as well. For the first battle, Earles teamed with Bill France to promote the event. Fans were told that the affair would be dust-free as a result of the gas and other supplies spread onto the track. Over 6,000 supporters arrived wearing their Sunday most readily useful, even though there have been only 750 chairs at the facility.AAs it turned out, the big event was a dusty matter which was acquired by Red Byron. Earles is paid as a leader of the sport, a man who was enhancing and continually reinventing his facility. Earles considered in giving the client his money's worth, because they were the maximum advantage. Martinsville happens to be considered a distinctive racetrack, due to the design and the fact that it transcends the background of NASCARA( the only course on the present schedule that was a part of the inaugural NASCAR year). Therefore, Earles felt that it absolutely was just right to honor the winners a distinctive trophy following a win, so in 1964 he started awarding a clock to the victor. Richard Petty holds the most advantages at Martinsville with 15, but only holds 12 grandfather clocks due to the undeniable fact that three of the wins predate the exercise. Earles passed on in 1999 at the age of 86. Regardless of his contributions to the sport, he also gave back by creating an Automotive Technology fund at Patrick Henry Community College. He also received a few awards for his efforts, such as the Myers Brothers Memorial Award, the American Spirit award that has been first received by Bob Hope, and the GM Goodwrench/L.G. Dewitt Entire life Award in 1994 for his contributions to NASCAR. A nominee for the 2012 and 2013 NASCAR Hall of Fame classes, search for Earles to be inducted soon.
