Although Kentucky Derby winner Orb is widely-regarded as being the favorite for the 2013 Preakness Pins, there are some proven dark horses at Pimlico in Baltimore this current year not getting enough credit within the oddsbooks.
That includes Santa claus Anita Derby winner Goldencents, co-owned simply by Louisville basketball coach Trent Pitino. Goldencents ranks fourth in the early odds headed inside the Preakness.
Here's a look into legitimate contenders who are certainly not getting enough credit at Pimlico this year, including Goldencents (odds using Bovada).
But a closer glance at the horse suggests he might not have been equipped to your classic distance of 1 1/4 kilometer after kilometer.
Goldencents' sire, Into Mischief, only raced seven furlongs at the time of his three-year-old campaign. Goldecents' dam, Fantastic Works, only won for six furlongs during the girl career. The truth is, Goldencents was never bred to become a horse with elite resistence.
That showed at this Derby. Goldecents was setting your pace with Palace Malice in the beginning, but began to fall back at about half a dozen furlongs. The result was an awkward finish.
Coming into your Derby, Goldencents had received three of his past four starts, including that Santa Anita Derby in April. All of some of those wins were at 1 1/8 a long way or shorter.
Govenor Charlie had triumphed in two of his primary three starts this year—including that Grade 3 Sunland Derby in March—before required to withdraw from the Kentucky Derby which includes a foot bruise.
Govenor Charlie may not have faced elite competition in the Sunland Derby, but that will shouldn't matter. Why? Because he set a stakes record at the race with a time of 1: 47. 54 in 1 1/8 mile after mile.
Also, the horse's pedigree is usually exceptional. His sire, Night Lute, was a champ sprinter in 2007, harvesting the Breeders' Cup Run in back-to-back outings. Your partner's dam, Silverbulletway, was this daughter of Hall with Famer Silverbulletday.
Itsmyluckyday is another indy that finished poorly at the Kentucky Derby, yet maintain a pool of makeup and pedigree to ensure success at 1 3/16 a long way.
Itsmyluckyday's sire, Lawyer Ron, was best at 1 1/8 kilometer after kilometer throughout his career, rather than the classic distance of 1 1/4 miles. Itsmyluckyday's dam, Viva Los angeles Slew, never won former one mile.
Like Goldencents, Itsmyluckyday what food was in contention through six furlongs at the Derby, but fell back down the stretch. At some shorter distance, the mount should perform better.
And, don't forget, Itsmyluckyday had won a pair of of three starts in 2013 headed into the Derby. There's a heritage of success there.
Itsmyluckyday can be coming off a appealing workout at Monmouth Meadow, according to The Activities Network, via the Las vegas Herald.
Trainer Ed Plesa Jr. said of the training session, via the report: "Perfect. He did precisely what I wanted. I captured him galloping out with: 59 and change (in several furlongs). I couldn't have asked for it to work out any better. "
