Eddie Jordan was chosen to replace Mike Rice as the coach for the Rutgers basketball team very last month. The scandal-plagued university thought on the list of turned a page using Jordan, a well-respected guru on both collegiate and professional levels — in addition to, as a university alumnus, his hiring was the greatest PR move.
Unfortunately, for any school that claimed to undertake its due diligence around this hire, one potentially major detail was left straight from the vetting process. Namely, that Jordan is simply not a graduate of Rutgers. He doesn't appear to possess a college degree at just about all, in fact.
Despite all the accolades he's received through the university and despite a school's many claims to the contrary, Jordan hasn't truly finished his degree, according to the Rutgers registrar's office. A cubicle sent me a confirmation document, found below, that will indicates that Jordan joined in classes at Rutgers because of 1973 to 1977. He went on to take more lessons in 1978, 1981, together with 1985. There was no degree listed within the document. I called in the registrar's office on Thursday and sought after clarification.
The report goes on to list several instances in which Jordan himself or other outlets known Jordan as a "graduate" or "alum" in the school, or that Rutgers is usually his "alma mater. " The latter two references are not, strictly speaking, incorrect — as a possible alumnus of a university or college, or saying a school is your alma mater, doesn't indicate you "graduated" from this school, though that's what it normally connotes.
Just saying he's a graduate, still, is flat out incorrect. And indeed, his Rutgers bio says he earned "a degree in health and physical education. " So, that's false.
Does all this matter? It might. Based on this article in The Minnesota Daily, all NCAA will need to have a college degree. Even secondary school coaches need a degree in physical education. Eddie Jordan does not appear to get a college degree. Ipso facto, he shouldn't have been given the job from college basketball coach.
We'll see if there's any new fallout out of this. The previous editor from this website, Glenn Davis, would likely have plenty to say with this latest development in Rutgers' storied story. For now, we'll just say: Come on, State University of Nj. Get it together.
