Barcelona were dealt a boost tonight as Tito Vilanova named Eric Abidal in the 19 man squad that travels to Vigo, although the Blaugrana will be without a whole host of key names. The veteran Spaniard will go down as one of Celta Vigo's greatest-ever goalkeepers and Pinto even won the Zamora trophy back in 2006 for his heroics between the sticks against the rest of La Liga. Will he be able to revisit his glory days with another superlative display at Balaidos?

With three defenders missing out through injury, there is a distinct possibility that we will see Marc Bartra finally start his first match in La Liga. Bartra has played just 45 minutes of football for the Blaugrana since his last La Liga appearance in November 2012, but with Puyol sidelined and PSG on the horizon, Bartra should get his opportunity tomorrow. I would prefer to see Javier Mascherano start alongside Bartra, although we could equally see Gerard Piqué – perhaps Roura/Tito would rather leave Mascherano out after a gruelling midweek match against Bolivia in high altitude? Martin Montoya will start with both Alba and Adriano missing through injury, meaning that Dani Alves is likely to complete the defense – unless of course Eric Abidal is a surprise inclusion in the starting XI.

Sergio Busquets may start at pivote, which would allow Alex Song to operate in a slightly more advanced role in midfield. Not only would that allow the Cameroonian midfielder to showcase his creative skills (Song somehow registered 14 assists in all competitions last season), but it would allow Thiago to really focus on the offensive side of his game rather than fret about his defensive responsibilities. Of course, Cesc Fàbregas could start in Busquets' place, pushing Song back to his usual defensive midfield role – and that's without considering Andrés Iniesta, even if I would like to see Iniesta rested ahead of Tuesday's pivotal clash.

Moving onto the attack, will Lionel Messi start? The Argentine has scored in his last eighteen La Liga appearances – for a little context, Osasuna have scored in just sixteen of their 28 matches this season – but he started both of Argentina's World Cup qualifiers, including last Tuesday's match with Bolivia. Messi deserves a break – it's not like we need him to defeat Celta Vigo (or do we?) – and we have plenty of capable replacements. Alexis Sánchez can start on the right-hand side of attack; Cesc Fàbregas is arguably our best alternative as a "false nine" and Cristian Tello has the potential to worry any defense from his usual position on the left-wing. Both Messi and David Villa would be available to feature as substitutes if absolutely necessary – and while I rate Deulofeu very highly, this arguably isn't the best time for the starlet to make his debut, at least, as a starter anyway. At present, Deulofeu's buy-out clause remains at an incredibly affordable €10 million; sure, a start could serve as a sweetener, prompting Gerard to sign a new deal, but it could also ramp up the interest in his services. We rushed Bojan into the spotlight, and that didn't turn out very well – after all, there's no rush. A cameo performance in a comfortable win wouldn't go amiss however...

Central midfielder Álex López, Danish winger Krohn-Dehli, back-up keeper Sergio, centre-half Samuel and former Spain Under-21 full-back Hugo Mallo all miss out through injury while top-scorer Iago Aspas (who was sent-off for what was probably the stupidest head-butt since Zidane's meltdown in the World Cup Final) and Venezuelan centre-half Andrés Túñez are suspended. MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) – Having vaulted swiftly to the top of English football thanks to huge sums of cash from Abu Dhabi, Manchester City are now investing in youth development to try to maintain their elevated status.

The Premier League champions are building a new football academy at a reported cost of more than 100 million pounds on land adjacent to their Etihad Stadium in the northern English city.

Scheduled to open for the start of the 2014-15 season, it will allow City to train up to 400 young players alongside a squad of first team professionals assembled at great cost from around the globe.

Classrooms and accommodation blocks will be built to educate and house some of the youngsters, while a 7,000-seater stadium will help them to get used to playing in front of crowds.

City's rapid rise over the past five years has been funded by owner Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, part of Abu Dhabi's ruling family.

They must now fall into line with new rules requiring clubs to move towards breakeven or face exclusion from European competition. However, spending on youth development is excluded from the calculations, making it a doubly valuable investment.

Impressive though the City plans are, it will require a change in mindset as well as shiny new buildings to reverse English soccer's failure to produce enough top quality young players, says Patrick Vieira, the former French international who is City's football development executive.

"With the number of people who play the game and the number of kids who love and play the game, I believe there is not enough talent compared to what football is about in this country," Vieira told Reuters in an interview.

"It's just a disappointment because I have been here for years and I love this country, I love the passion from the fans and the people," added Vieira, who played for Arsenal for nine seasons.

Vieira, 36, began his playing career in France and also played in Italy, giving him exposure to coaching methods across Europe.

He speaks of the need for patience with young players, saying an over-emphasis on results can stunt the development of talented teenagers.

Growing up in France, he said the emphasis was on encouraging budding professionals to develop awareness on the field, learning to look for the next pass and to make the right decisions when on the ball.

"Just enjoy yourself, don't be afraid to play, don't be afraid to make a mistake because we all make mistakes," said Vieira, explaining what teenagers should be told. "What is important is to learn from the mistakes you are making."

The English Premier League, the richest in the world, has recently changed its rules to allow the clubs with the top ranked academies to take players full time from the age of 12 and recruit from all over the country.

"The big difference if you compare the English, the Spanish or the French or the Dutch kids, I think overseas the kids are spending more time on the training field than the English boy," Vieira said.

"The rules changing I think has really improved the quality of the players and I think it's important as well that a club like City can get a young boy from London."

"The education part of it is really quite important, as a football club we want these players to be a good human being, the person who can answer all the difficulties he will find in life," Vieira said.

City realise they have some catching up to do compared with more established European powers when it comes to nurturing their own talent.

"Barcelona have been doing it for the last 35 years and we have just been doing it for a few years and we are a long, long way behind," Vieira said.

"But in the next four to five years I hope that we will have young players who will come through the academy and play for the first team because we have some really good young players."

After finishing fifth in the Premier League in 2011-12 and earning a place in the Europa League, the Toon looked to be headed in the right direction.

Newcastle were embarrassingly exposed for their lack of squad depth, and any hopes of reaching the heights of the previous season were dashed before Christmas.

Relegation became a serious concern. Europe no longer seemed important. The players seemed confused and uninspired, and Alan Pardew didn't look like he had any answers to his side's collapse.

However, the floodgates have slammed shut and the side has recovered. Now that the club is a little safer than they have been before, this is a time to examine the positives that have come from the players, staff and executives of Newcastle being put in such an uncomfortable situation.

The promise of the future, at least for now, outweighs the pain of today. Here are six reasons why the Magpies' poor season Is a blessing in disguise.

With Newcastle United languishing just outside the relegation zone entering the January transfer window, owner Mike Ashley had no choice but to act.

French Ligue 1 stars Mathieu Debuchy, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Yoan Gouffran, Moussa Sissoko and Massadio Haïdara as well as hot young Dutch prospect Kevin Mbabu now find themselves in Geordie territory, and what a difference they have made.

Debuchy, Gouffran and Sissoko immediately entered the starting XI, with Yanga-Mbiwa replacing an injured Fabricio Coloccini in central defense and Haïdara featuring prominently in the club's Europa League fixtures.

It is tough to imagine what position the Magpies would be in if these acquisitions hadn't been made, with relegation seeming like more than just a possibility.

And even though Newcastle are still within striking distance of the bottom three, the quality and depth the side now possess make that scenario much less likely.

Now that Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias has admitted that the club made a mistake by not making enough major acquisitions over the summer to the Evening Chronicle, the pressure will be on Ashley and his team to invest much more cash in the next summer transfer window.

Some fans said at the time—and all fans should agree now—that only signing Vurnon Anita, Gael Bigirimana and the mystery man that is Romain Amalfitano was not enough for a club preparing to take on European football.

This summer, fan pressure will be at an all-time high to make purchases, specifically a striker and a potential replacement for Fabricio Coloccini.

The man Mike Ashley (and most of England) wants is Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang, a striker from Ligue 1 side St. Etienne.

He won't be an easy signing, but with Mike Ashley personally taking an interest in the player, not to mention the club's current investment in French talent, this deal has real potential.

Newcastle heavily pursued Lille right-back Mathieu Debuchy over the summer, but came up short and were unable to bring him Tyneside until January.

Throughout much of the 2012-13 season, Newcastle's most important players have been forced off the pitch for long stretches of time and some footballers who weren't expecting much playing time found themselves in the first team.

Rob Elliot, an Alan Pardew signing from Charlton Athletic who had yet to feature in the Premier League, was forced into action in late February after an injury to Tim Krul suffered in a Europa League fixture against Metalist Kharkiv.

Newcastle fans were not particularly thrilled with Elliot's only previous first-team action against Nottingham Forest in the League Cup in 2011, and when Southampton managed to score past him in the third minute of his first match, many had visions of relegation dancing through their heads.

Since then, however, Elliot has proven more than capable of handling his place between the posts, and his excellent distribution of the ball even led to an assist on a Papiss Cisse wonder goal.

With Steve Harper set to move on in the summer, the Toon Army can rest assured that Tim Krul won't be the only quality keeper in the squad.

Another bright spot has been James Perch, who has proven to be a useful and vastly versatile player. He has been able to cover wherever needed in central midfield and all over the back line, and he even picked up his first career goal with the Magpies against Manchester United in December.

Sylvain Marveaux and Gael Bigirimana have also made the most of their newfound first-team chances, with the former producing amazing assists in back-to-back matches for Papiss Cisse goals that would win matches against Stoke City and Anzhi Makhachkala, and the latter proving to be an exciting midfield prospect with a high work rate.

In the absence of the injured Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor, the former Wycombe Wanderers man kept the hearts of Newcastle supporters in their throats every time the ball came his way.

His defensive positioning is reminiscent of a kitten chasing a laser pointer, and offensively his ridiculous constant hoof-balling was disastrous for Newcastle's attacking creativity.

Thankfully, the presence of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa should keep him off even the bench for at least the rest of the season, and he may have featured in his last game for Newcastle.

Youngsters Sammy Ameobi and Shane Ferguson also failed to live up to expectations, proving not quite ready for the spotlight. Now on loan to Middlesbrough and Birmingham City, respectively, they might not get another chance at first-team action for quite some time.

Finally, Gabriel Obertan once again has proven that he can do two things: run really fast and avoid being particularly helpful.

Xisco and Nile Ranger didn't have to change much to fit in with this season's underachieving squad. They'd been underachieving their whole Newcastle careers.

Xisco only featured in nine Premier League matches in his five years with the club, scoring one goal. While typically spending most of his time on loan, this season Xisco hung around the Newcastle reserves reminding everyone how nice it would be to have his £5.7 million transfer fee back.

With the whole of Newcastle struggling to survive in the Premier League, the wastes of space that were Xisco and Ranger became exponentially more frustrating, and Derek Llambias was forced to act.

Xisco's contract termination was a minor financial relief, and Nile Ranger's release by mutual agreement was a decision that had to be made.

Cutting out the squad's dead weight has proven addition by subtraction, and now their roster spots can be filled by players filled with potential who really want to be there.

Call it wishful thinking, but this writer would like to believe the money that would have been going to Nile Ranger will now be spent on adding slides to St James' Park.

Regardless of where the money comes from, slides look to be a genuine possibility to improve the flow of foot traffic at the Magpies' stadium, and it's a brilliant idea.

Newcastle fans have always supported their club through good times and bad, but in a tough season like this one, wouldn't it be easier to come to a match knowing that if things go south, you can slide right out of the stadium?

This all may seem silly, but it is certainly symbolic of the new hope for the coming seasons that has sprung out of the changes the club has undergone.

The rest of this season (both domestically and in Europe) and the seasons to come bring with them more potential than Newcastle sides have possessed for years, and if Alan Pardew really deserved his Manager of the Year awards last season, he'll be more than able to lead this squad well on its way to glory.

Newcastle United PR and Fans Turn Wigan Disaster Around - The Mag

The Haidara injury has thankfully not proved as bad as it looked at the time with the player due back early April, while off the pitch the club have intelligently handled the behaviour of some of our fans pre-match.

Most of you will have heard by now that when a number of our coaches arrived at Wigan, they parked adjacent to some amateur football pitches and supporters swarmed onto the pitch disrupting the match.

Wigan Cosmos had their ball stolen and there was other minor damage, embarrassingly the whole thing was filmed and seen by a worldwide audience.

In the aftermath, Newcastle fans got together and raised money to compensate the amateur team for their loss and then Newcastle United stepped in and did the same.

On top of that, the club have now invited Wigan Cosmos to play on the St.James' Park pitch and while the gestures won't receive quite the same amount of coverage as the original damage/embarrassment, it just shows how much goodwill can be generated by a little bit of money and consideration.

Manchester City: 5 Ways City Can Challenge for EPL Title Again Next Season - Bleacher Report

Given the 12-point gap that separates Manchester United and the current English Premier League champions with just nine league games to go, Manchester City look to lose the title this year with the FA Cup as their only realistic chance of silverware for the season.

From scoring a mere 51 goals to date (compared to last season's 93) to conceding 26 already (29), many things have gone wrong for Roberto Mancini's side as they enter the final months of an underwhelming season.

But all should not be gloomy at the Etihad Stadium, as this season will and should be used as a valuable lesson for City in their gradual but determined rise to the top of European football.

It's common knowledge that Roberto Mancini hasn't been pleased with the work that Samir Nasri has put in this season. He's made it clear in public (Daily Mail).

But looking at the season as a whole, it's not just Nasri who has underperformed—a whole host of City players who set the bar high last season have, for various reasons, dropped their levels this term. Vincent Kompany and Sergio Aguero have been struggling with injury and poor form, and Yaya Toure was absent due to his commitments at the African Cup of Nations, among others.

That's not to say the aforementioned players should be let go; rather, those who are dispensable should be moved on.

Whether this includes the disappointing Nasri, the usurped Joleon Lescott, the simply not-good-enough Kolo Toure or even the reportedly want-away Edin Dzeko (BBC Sport), there is dead wood to be cleared at City, and this summer should be an opportunity to reshape the squad.

For a club that has aspirations to be included in Europe's footballing elite but still find themselves a fair distance away from a most illustrious tag, City fans will enjoy the signing of renowned players from established clubs over the next few years but will also agonize at the prospect of losing them to powerhouse clubs.

There's Yaya Toure, who has been linked with a move away following his agent's high-profile wage demands (Goal.com). There's Sergio Aguero, who has reportedly attracted admiring glances from Barcelona (Express). And there's Carlos Tevez, who is rumored to return to former club Boca Juniors (Express).

It seems strange that a club of City's standing might be considered a selling club. But if they let go of players so important to their spine, they would be well on their way to living up to that label.

City must simply keep players like Toure and Aguero, who were big-name coups themselves when they signed and played such an important part in getting the Citizens their first Premier League title.

But most importantly, when it comes to transfers, the Manchester City hierarchy must learn from an opportunity lost.

Last summer's transfer failings were highlighted by Roberto Mancini in the media as he directed comments towards sporting director Brian Marwood (Daily Mail), but the overall transfer policy seemed to be misplaced.

Names like Daniele De Rossi (Metro), Daniel Agger (Daily Mail) and Javi Martinez (Daily Mail) were linked as big-name signings to augment Mancini's squad, but curiously City settled on the likes of Javi Garcia, Jack Rodwell and Scott Sinclair, none of whom have impressed in a City shirt.

With the exception of the precociously impressive Matija Nastasic, who has taken Joleon Lescott's place as City's starting left-sided center-back, City failed to acquire any top-class players to build on an encouraging title-winning season.

By this summer, they will likely not be looking at prospective signings as reigning Premier League champions. That makes it an even more pivotal transfer window in the context of City's rise.

Whether it is Manchester United's famous winning mentality, Chelsea's ruthless "professional" wins or Arsenal's eye-catching, swashbuckling style, there is something about title winners that separate them from the rest.

Last season, City boasted impressive scoring numbers and an admirable defensive record. But in Mancini's time at the Etihad, there has been a noticeable lack of team identity and style amongst the City ranks. Too often, it feels as if matches are won due to individual performance rather than exceptional team play.

This has at least some parts to do with the squad. An often-reminisced tactical switch that Mancini could rely on was the pushing up of Yaya Toure after Nigel De Jong was summoned from the bench. No longer. This season, with Aguero off form and injured, City have looked toothless and even too predictable at times. David Silva's form has noticeably dropped off.

Of course, it takes time to build such an identity, but with the talents at his disposal and the financial support that he enjoys, Mancini should surely have enough resources to truly develop a "Manchester City" brand.

First, some much-needed recognition for the current manager amidst a seeming tendency to criticize him for his public outbursts: Since he took up the City reins from Mark Hughes, City have ascended to a whole new level. Whether it is in terms of players brought in or trophies won, it is apparent that City have risen from ambitious players to one of the big boys.

For all of his pedigree, Mancini has not enjoyed sustained success in Europe, while the aforementioned failure to truly develop a City identity has become apparent.

There's a reason managers like Manuel Pellegrini, who has worked wonders with such unfancied clubs as Villarreal and now Malaga, are being linked with the City job (ESPN). Presumably, Pellegrini's record in both domestic and European competition and in building teams with an exceptional work ethic and an attractive playing style makes him an exciting candidate for a club that wants to become great.

A supportive and seemingly sensible City hierarchy have shown the leniency and patience that is required to build a footballing dynasty. Now, they have to decide this summer whether Mancini is the best person to helm the ship.

Arsenal Look To Take Advantage of QPRs Impending Relegation ...

QPR could well be one of the clubs relegated from the Premier League this season, as the London club find themselves seven points adrift of safety with only eight matches remaining in the season. Despite the arrivals of stars like Loic Remy and Christopher Samba, the club could be staring down the barrel in a few months time. According to the Daily Star, Arsenal are looking to take advantage of the relegation by keeping tabs on Remy and Samba. These two players were persuaded to join the West London outfit with some serious money.

They are believed to be receiving around £100,000 per week in wages, which is an unsustainable amount of money even in the Premier League for a club like QPR. As a result, they could be forced into selling their January signings if they are relegated.

Arsenal are likely to be in the market for a striker and a defender. Incidentally, both Remy and Samba have been on the eyes of Arsenal for a while now. However, they have been unable to take the plunge and sign them.

Wenger, though, will be interested in the possibility of persuading Remy especially after having seen the striker adapt well to English football. He has already scored three goals for QPR in just five matches.

Samba has been an Arsenal target even when he was a Blackburn player. Little has changed since then, as the defender has been able to shore up the QPR defence immediately upon his arrival. QPR had conceded around two goals per game prior to Samba's arrival, but they have been conceding just one goal game since his arrival.

Remy is thought to have inserted a £6 million relegation release clause in his contract. Samba could be available for around £12 million – the fee paid by Rangers to the Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala.

Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young and Anderson are fairly obvious, but Shinji Kagawa, Danny Welbeck, Nani, Phil Jones, Wayne Rooney and also Robin van Persie are candidates for different reasons. Kagawa, Valencia and Young have only recently showed signs of being fully recovered from their injuries. Jackson and Nani have been similarly blighted but should really be back this weekend. Welbeck has shown up well in certain games, especially the two Real Madrid connections, but has still only scored two goals in 33 matches all season. Rooney and van Persie appeared as if a solid alliance early in the time, but Rooney's form has been patchy despite scoring 16 aims and van Persie seemingly have lost his scoring contact for as soon as. Nevertheless, Sir Alex Ferguson needs to have a complete team to pick from this week-end (except the luckless Darren Fletcher) and is expected to field two different teams on Saturday and Monday. Anderson will probably feature in just one of those fits but will have to make better sort than recently, because today he is definitely staring at the exit this summer.
