Have the Manhunter Lakers Actually Gotten Much Better Since Early Season Uncertainty?

You want to believe the Los Angeles Lakers have gotten better since their early time implosion, you actually do. Nevertheless you can not. Not if the Lakers continue steadily to make exactly the same problems over again and over and over. In some ways, nevertheless, they're better off. Dwight Howard's play has increased a good deal since the All-Star break. He's averaging 16.6 items, 14.7 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per recreation in his last 17, and his flexibility is easily at a season-high. There is a good situation to be produced for Los Angeles ' increased sense of camaraderie and proven chemistry. Breaks of expertise sans Kobe Bryant left the people convinced that the Lakers had turned a corner. But have they? Has L. A. actually passed the purpose of panic? Are the Lakers ultimately fit for contention? Three-quarters worth of lethargy from the Golden State Warriors says no. The edition of the Lakers that fell just six points shy of eliminating an 18-point fourth-quarter shortage suggests otherwise. With the standard season winding down, we are required to agree to the former. Los Angeles ' latest loss. Losers of their last three games, two which were against sub.-500 factions, the Lakers end up just one game prior to the Utah Jazz for the final and eighth Western Conference playoff spot. Amid pleas for Hollywood's best to hurl themselves at the panic button, Bryant himself refuses to do this (via Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports ): Pain was also felt by the Lakers ( 36-35 ) with their third straight loss that caused ground to be lost by them for the final and eighth playoff place in the Western Conference. The Lakers, presently in the eighth spot, have three clubs on the heels since the Utah Jazz (35-36) are a casino game behind, the Dallas Mavericks (34-36) walk by 1 1/2 and the Portland Trail Blazers (33-37) are 2 1/2 out. No concern was shown by kobe Bryant. "I have been relaxed all year," Bryant told Yahoo! Activities. "I was calm when we were five games out telling everyone we are going to be fine. So now we are ahead in the eighth area and we're supposed to panic?" Panicking is not a desirable quality in a team, and it is a foreign concept to the ever composed Black Mamba. Desperation, though? That is a necessity. And at this time, the exigency of the problem isn't resonating with L A. "Our offense was anemic," Lakers head mentor Mike D'Antoni said following a reduction to Golden State (via Mike Bresnahan of the La Times). Anemic, feeble, pallid, apathetic, complacenta'those are words that should maybe not be associated with La. Inside 15 activities to go, they should be fighting for his or her postseason lives, banding together to render the critics mistaken. They should be learning from their errors. However they haven't. Have these Lakers really turned a Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports The Lakers were considered to have changed as the results have changed. Heading into the break, they certainly were 25-29. Ever since then they're 11-6. Something had to have changed, they'd to have altered in a few features, and perhaps they did. For the most part though, we've seen different results, nevertheless the same Lakers. Through the initial 54 activities of the season, Tinseltown wasAdropping shootingA45.7 percent from the ground (eighth), 101.6 pointsA( sixth ),A22.2 helps (15th) and 35.1 percent from strong (15th) per game. La was also letting 100.9 things (23rd) and coughing up the ball 14.9 times (fifth) a night. Hollywood's plus-0.7 point-differential rated 12th as well. The result? A Lakers group that has been four activities under.500 and falling out of the playoff picture rapidly. To escape the unforeseen and high priced nightmare that became their time will be a enormous undertaking. It'd require Kobe and team to eliminate their deficiencies or at the very least mitigate them. One streak that found the Lakers get 11-of-17 later, they are back the playoffs. Three subsequent losses to garments they're supposed to be better than wasn't ideal, but their record supported Bryant's Buzz Lightyear-esque refusal to worry. The Lakers had developed. They had clearly gotten better, with a playoff berth not quite in their possession. Or you know, perhaps not. The Lakers aren't always much better than they were before.USA TODAY Sports Inside their last 17 games, the Lakers are calculating 103.5 factors, dishing out 21.4 allows, capturing 45.9 percent from the ground and 37.9 percent from three a game title. They're also letting 102.1 things and choosing 13.9 turnovers per bout. Is that of necessity better? La is scoring more points, capturing a higher percentage from the area and choosing fewer turnovers but additionally allowing more points and passing less. The team's plus-1.4 point-differential doubles that of what they published before the break, however is still barely indicative of a team that has it all identified. Different effects, same Lakers (via chartgo.com). Because the above graph shows us, the Lakers' stats this side of the break are nearly identical to that particular of before it. Their report is way better, but statistically, they are maybe not. These Lakers still allow 15.9 fast-break points per game (29th). They however surrender 44.4 things in the paint an evening (28th). They still rank 19th in defensive efficiency,A25th in points permitted (101.2), 22nd in assists (22) and 22nd in bench points (26.9). They still have the second-worst road record (13-23) of any playoff team. They're exactly the same. In where they've all year so many ways, they are still struggling. Get their heavy disappointment contrary to the Warriors. There was an excessive amount of this from Kobe. We found Kobe shoot 11-of-27 from the dish and floor out just three assists, when nearly every information implores him to complete just the opposite. The Lakers are 12-23 Awhen Bryant fingers out fewer than five allows, butA28-16 once the Mamba falls at least five. And they are 18-9 when he adds at the least eight. They are 3-11, If the Mamba efforts at the least 25 images. When he hoists up at the least 20, they are 14-25. However when he jacks up less than 20 efforts, the Lakers areA22-11. Ready for the real kicker? La is 19-5 when Kobe combines his deft passing (at least five assists) with a controlled trigger-finger (under 20 chance attempts). Why is he heaving 27 pictures toward the rim?, in a game where Bryant himself said he needed to get the ball to Howard more He has an implicit response once they challenge, which we could respect to hold the Lakers, but he also has an inherent want to gain. When will the latter trump the former? We know the Lakers are better when Bryant balances facilitating with shooting, and so does he. Why would he ever stray far from following that blueprint? And why are we still seeing games where Howard fails to just take even 10 shots? Howard requires more looks, more generally. Los Angeles is aware he requires the ball more. Benefits commence to accumulate when he scores. Howard has tried fewer than 10 field goals 34 times in 2010. In those 34 activities, the Lakers are 10-24. He's also fallen under 15 points on 27 occasions. La is 10-17 in those situations. When he topples those plateaus however, the Lakers are greatly greater. In the 38 games Howard has scored at the least 15 points, the team isA23-15. AThey may also be 24-11 when he receives at least 10 shot efforts, and 19-6 when he requires at least 12. Amazement need certainly to determine ways to get him even more appears down low," Bryant said after the Lakers lost to the Warriors (via Bleacher Report's Jimmy Spencer). "And I tried to move back as much as I possibly can and allow that to develop." Yeah, the Lakers do have to find a method to get Howard involved more. And if that was Kobe taking a step right back against the Warriors, he must simply take yet another huge step in that same way. No, these Lakers aren't much distinctive from the business we saw earlier in the season.Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Spor These aren't new problems the Lakers are coping with. Every damage, it is some mix of the exact same story. Bryant shot an excessive amount of. Howard wasn't involved enough on crime. They committed too many turnovers. The urgency behind the overall game itself does not resonate with them before the fourth quarter. Yet, we're designed to feel the Lakers have improved. They are ready to make a strong postseason force. That they're really better. "If you wish to win games, you have got to play the right way," Howard explained (via Bresnahan). Often, the Lakers play the "right way." As they don't for those times, well we are only likely to relax and buy into the notion that the Lakers are betterAthan they were before. Once they are in fact not. *AllAstats used in this short article were gathered from Basketball-Reference, Synergy Sports, 82games.com andANBA.com unless otherwise noted.

FGCU becomes first 15 seed to reach round of 16

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Florida Gulf Coast can only hope its second weekend in the NCAA tournament is as much fun as its first.

The little-known Eagles made NCAA tournament history Sunday night, becoming the first 15 seed to reach the Sweet 16 — and they did it in style with a convincing 81-71 win over No. 7 San Diego State that had the Wells Fargo Center partying.

A couple of hours later, Duke joined them with a 66-50 win over Creighton — and a decidedly more subdued postgame celebration.

Second-seeded Duke gets No. 3 Michigan State in the Midwest Regional semifinals, while FGCU — the upstart state school — plays the system's flagship university, third-seeded Florida, in the South Regional semifinals at Dallas.

"We got a lot of exposure this weekend and now I'm sure it'll be increased," FGCU coach Andy Enfield said in one of the understatements of the tournament. "If you watched us play and know the personalities, it won't be a problem. They enjoy themselves. I think it's important for them to take this in. I want all our players to take a couple deep breaths and say, 'Wow, we're in the Sweet 16, we've accomplished a lot.'"

The players — and their new fans from Philadelphia — had a blast in their first two NCAA tournament games: the 78-68 victory over second-seeded Georgetown that brought the Eagles (26-10) to the nation's attention and the impressive win over the seventh-seeded Aztecs.

"Words can't describe this feeling as being a 15 seed, the first 15 seed to ever do this," FGCU point guard Brett Comer said. "I don't think it's really sunk in to any of us yet. I feel like maybe it will tomorrow, but right now we're on such an emotional high it's hard to come down from."

The Eagles continued their high-flying act that resulted in some highlight-reel dunks, many on assists from Coomer, who finished with 10 points and 14 assists.

"We got on a run, and when we push the ball we get the crowd behind us and we get a dunk, and then we go to the other end and get a stop and another dunk, it's hard to try to turn the momentum back like that," Comer said.

The Eagles broke the game open against Georgetown with a 21-2 run in the second half. Against San Diego State it was a 17-0 run and when it was over the Eagles led 71-52 with 4:19 to play and the only decisions left were how the players and fans were going to celebrate.

"We're all about having fun and also playing really hard and that's something we like to do, we like to get the crowd involved," said Sherwood Brown, the A-Sun's player of the year, who had 17 points despite being saddled with foul trouble. "The whole crowd got behind us even if they are not from Fort Myers, or as I like to say, Dunk City."

Jamal Franklin had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Aztecs (23-11), who were trying to reach the regional semifinals for the second time in three years.

"I just told him just keep being the leader that he is, make sure the ball is in his hands, make sure he does what he has to do to keep his team rolling," Franklin said.

"They play with a swagger, and they have a right to do that," said San Diego State coach Steve Fisher, who knows about players with that attitude having led the Fab Five to consecutive national championship games at Michigan. "You can have that look and feel, but you have to compete and play to earn your spurs, and they've done that."

Freshman Rasheed Sulaimon scored 21 points and Seth Curry added 17 as Duke advanced to the round of 16 for the fourth time in five years.

A year after they lost their NCAA tournament opener, the Blue Devils (29-5) are in the regional semifinal for the 23rd time after holding Creighton to 30.2 percent shooting (16 of 53), including 2 of 19 from 3-point range.

Mason Plumlee, Josh Hairston and Ryan Kelly battled foul trouble all game long that could have doomed the Blue Devils but seventh-seeded Creighton (28-8) never made a serious run in the second half.

Doug McDermott scored 21 points on 4-for-16 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds for the Bluejays, who were knocked out in the third round by an Atlantic Coast Conference team for the second straight season. Creighton lost to North Carolina last year.

Stevan Jovetic: Analysing Arsenal, Manchester Town Stunning Goal - Bleacher Report

Stevan Jovetic is a wanted man, and The MetroAhave continued the trend of connecting the Fiorentina star to prime English Premier League clubs in Arsenal and Manchester City. The links between Roberto Mancini and Jovetic are historical, and many thought the forthcoming summer to be one in which the Montengrin eventually leaves the Artemio Franchi. But this season under Vincenzo Montella has been nothing but a success, and the building blocks put for a brilliant future in Florence might have Jovetic loitering a little longer. At the lowest it'll up his payment, just like him in the side, Montella will feel the Viola can challenge for the Serie A concept and influence the UEFA Champions Leaguea'and rightly so. Jovetic is the talisman in the device and, at only 23 years of age, can already be considered a world-class player. He's developed his game quickly over the last 12 months, shifting from an attacking midfielder of sorts to an all-round forward capable of playing as many jobs and roles as we have hands. Think about the undeniable fact that he missed the complete 2010-11 period with a cruciate leg injury and you can't help but be satisfied by the man's rapid ascension to football's elite. He represents 1 of 2 different tasks Montella has lay out for him this season with frequency, and Fiorentina's new flirtation with the 4-3-3 development added a possible third. How Fiorentina set up vs. Internazionale For the significant part, the Viola have run in a 3-5-1-1 program that averages high-ball possession and outstanding transitions across the field. Mark Pizarroa'the prototypical midfield metronomea'teams up with Alberto Aquilani and Borja Valero very well to feed Montella's fighting participants withAregularity. The front two changes based on opposition, with Jovetic as the prima punta before Adem Ljajic or Jovetic dropping into the pit behind target man Luca Toni. The Montenegrin's comprehension of the game is immense and clearly favors the freedom to fall in and out of the line and torment different defenders at different times, but Montella knows his strongest combination could be the Ljajic-Jovetic association. This means the star man plays as a No. 9 but drifts interchanges and wide with Ljajic, who often performs from the left side and penetrates the field at will. With Juan Guillermo Cuadrado at right-wing-back, Ljajic's favouring of the left does not discrepancy the Viola. Jovetic is man who's only normal height and strength small of the "complete forward" name, and his capability to score thunderbolts from outside the area make his complicated dribbling and passing around the side of the area even more dangerous. In the current market, Jovetic will probably be worth A30 million (a35.22 million). That is a lot, but people of his standard cost a lot. Unfortunately for City and Arsenal, such could be the Viola's amazing season, Jovetic may well not even desire to jump ship for one more year.

Borussia Dortmund line up deal for frustrated Arsenal star Tomas Rosicky - Metro

Borussia Dortmund are ready to offer Tomas Rosicky a dream return to the club in the summer after he expressed his frustration with life at Arsenal.

Rosicky joined the Gunners in 2006 from Dortmund and despite a strong start, injuries have ruined his career in north London and he has since been limited to a fringe role.

The 32-year-old has made just three Premier League appearances this term and told the Czech press this week that he is frustrated with his limited role at Arsenal.

'I feel very well, the results in fitness tests were the same as they were in previous seasons when I played regularly.'

'It's the manager's team and I fully respect his decisions. I cannot do anything else other than train properly and wait for a chance.'

But Rosicky is almost certain to have other offers of game time at the end of the season, with former club Dortmund known to have sounded out their former hero for a potential return.

According to reports in Germany, a possible deal would likely be on pay-as-you-play terms, but Dortmund believe the impact of having Rosicky back in their ranks could be huge for commercial possibilities.

Everton and Fulham have previously expressed an interest in Rosicky, but are not thought to be interested at present.
